About Penny Spawforth

My life purpose
I have enjoyed teaching the Alexander Technique for over 27 years and the last decade has taken me on a path of enquiry about how we humans can thrive better in our relations with each other.
This led me to learn from the movement internationally known as Nonviolent Communication (NVC) - and becoming a certified trainer in 2011  after years of study and self-enquiry.

The core principles of the Alexander Technique, NVC and Permaculture Design are the three main (but not the only) teachings that inform my work.

My work is principally about helping people be less reactive, and make more self-connected choices...
choices that help them live a fulfilling and satisfying life. This is one of my hopes for the planet - that if we can learn to get on peacefully with each other and live in an environment where every living being matters there is hope for a thriving world that my daughter and others can continue to enjoy. I have come to understand that this work is done person by person and is unlikely to be fully realised in my life time!

My husband and I live on a 12 acre, largely wooded, river-fronted small holding where we grow vegetables, run retreats and  practice groups and I teach and coach individuals.  We are also developing a hydro-electric scheme on the river here. I have a 22 year old daughter and three grown-up step-children.

The Three Teachings

The Alexander Technique
I have been teaching this Technique for over 25 years now and it has been of influence all my life as my father trained with Mr FM Alexander in the 1950s. I enjoy the whole-self approach this Technique offers - teaching through the use of my whole being: my hands (which are simply extensions of my own 'non-doing' and clear intentions), my observations and verbal instructions. I teach this work one-to-one with people of all ages over about the age of 14 years old.
I completed my three year full-time training in 1990, am a member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander technique (STAT) and fully DBS checked and insured.

Nonviolent (Compassionate) Communication (NVC)
For the last decade or so I have been growing in a different but complementary direction: inquiring into habits of communication with myself and others. This has been just as rewarding a journey and gives me great hope for a more compassionate and collaborative future. I love sharing this work both with individuals and small groups. I successfully completed my internationally recognised certification training with CNVC* in Nov 2011 as well as Robert Gonzales' 2 year (NVC) LIFE programme

Permaculture
The three tenets of Permaculture are Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. I completed the full Permaculture Design Course in 2010 and my partner and I have used the Permaculture design principles as guiding principles for many years in how we observe, plan and manage our small-holding, our home and our life.
